#30 – Let me introduce you...

Here are ten typeface I bet you didn't know.

We’re back! Thanks for not giving up on me. I’ll do my best to start sending these out at a regular interval again. Got around a two hundred typeface links ready to share so I should be good to go for a while…

But without further ado: Below are ten typeface I’m pretty sure you’ve not seen before. “Number eight will blow your mind.”

Unique typefaces

One of my favorite recent releases. This 1950’s style poster grotesk has a warm and hand-made feel to it. It comes in 162 styles (!) ranging from narrow to extended. Absolutely perfect for all things branding, but also opinionated website design.

It’s exactly what it says on the tin, a big sexy sans. Is it me or is it getting hot in here? Doesn’t come in 162 styles and it doesn’t even feature lower case letters, but it does not need to. It does one thing only and it does it well.

Sure, Recht is not as unique as some of the other fonts in this newsletter. But it’s the small details that make my spidey-sense tingle, in a good way. This geometric sans is just so pleasing to look at.

Make sure to check out the website, as the image above doesn’t do full justice to the diversity and awesomeness of this typeface. It looks like it’s been lifted from an 80’s record sleeve or arcade game hall branding.

If you imagine yourself to be DIN, then Midnight Sans would be your cool uncle. It’s a straightforward condensed typeface with an industrial feel, but they’ve managed to make it feel fresh. Oh, and it has subtly rounded, which is always good in my book.

Though I’m from the 80’s, tall serif typefaces like Denton evoke the memory of graphics from the golden age of advertising – the 70’s. Nostalgia can be a bit of a b*tch but I really think our designs need more serif typefaces, not less.

At times I get a bit tired of seeing inktraps everywhere but here they are a great fit. It’s one of those fun typefaces that’s just waiting to be implemented in the right branding project.

Speaking of nostalgia… I have a weak spot for pixel art and anything that reminds me of playing games on DOS with a CRT screen. (Gramps talking here.) Gridular is a nice throwback to that era, with a modern twist. And as you can see on the website it absolutely slaps on small sizes too (that’s what cool kids say these days, right?).

I can already hear the product designers bemoan the lack of a nice grotesque typeface. So here you go, a nice workhorse typeface for when you want something like Helvetica but with a little bit more spirit.

Not sure how long it’s been out but I’ll take the risk. You see the bottom of the g and the t? That’s why I love this typeface. It’s those little details that make this a great typeface to pair with a logo.
