TastyType #25 – Variety is the Spice of Life

Also true when it comes to fonts.

TastyType #25 – Variety is the Spice of Life

Cheesy title, but it’s true. I love Inter and Poppins as much as the next designer but sometimes design can get a bit bland. Now, let’s not rush and sacrifice readability and usability just to look snazzy. But perhaps use one or more of the fonts below to add some flavour to your designs?

And keep scrolling for some more neat typeface stuff near the end.

Spicy Typefaces

Unique yet readable? Check. Awesome looking? Hell yes. You can grab this single weight (desktop and web) font for $25 bucks on FutureFonts, a place for designers to sell work-in-progress fonts.

Want to add some warmth to your design? Give this positive-vibes-only serif font family a look. It comes in six weights and has all the right ingredients for great branding, book covers, quotes, and more. The possibilities are endless.

This typeface is a lot of things, but not ordinary. Unless it becomes the new normal, in that case it’s on point. It’s got 16 different styles, plenty to play around with.

If the previous fonts are a bit too adventurous then how about this one. At first glance it might look pretty regular, until you spot all the small details that give this typeface flavour and make it all but standard.

Really good handwritten fonts are few and far between. This is one of the good ones. Comes in a regular and bold weight, both with an alternative version. This is gonna look cool on presentations, tutorials, quotes, and even brand assets.

Before you keep scrolling, please note that the image above are stylistic alternates. They are awesome and got me al giddy. This font also comes with more approachable shapes, it’s an absolute workhorse. I mean, just check out the website.

This brand new typeface is both round and friendly, but also futuristic. Basically all the stuff I like. Looking forward to pair this with a logo design.

I love font families with lots of options. FK Grotesk has a normal, semi-mono, and mono family. Above you can see the Semi-Mono in action and I’m a fan of the industrial look. It’s gonna look good as part of brand or UI design.

This newsletter is not complete without a free typeface to snag. This strong display typeface is available in a single weight and looks rad on anything that requires a big and strong typeface.

The Neat Stuff

The online sleuths at FontsInUse have managed to identify the iconic typeface used on the Dune books since 1965. It makes for a very interesting read.

The downside to handwriting fonts is that the letters stay consistent, unlike real handwriting. This little tool generates realistic handwriting where you can tweak four perimeters to get something you like and provides a SVG for downloading.

Again, thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed this issue. See you next week(ish).
